A casket spray is the large arrangement of flowers that rests on the lid of the casket during the service. It is usually the most prominent arrangement at a funeral, and it is traditionally chosen by the closest family.
How big is a casket spray?
It depends on the casket. A half-couch spray covers the closed lower half of a casket that is open for viewing, and is usually about three feet across. A full-couch spray covers a closed casket and is larger, often four feet across or more.
What colors and flowers do families choose?
- Red roses for love and respect, often chosen by a spouse.
- White roses, lilies and orchids for peace and remembrance.
- Soft mixes of pink, peach, lavender or cream, for a gentler look.
- Red, white and blue for a veteran or someone who served.
- Garden flowers in the person's favorite colors, for a more personal tribute.
Who orders the casket spray?
Traditionally the immediate family, such as a spouse, the children or the parents. Friends and colleagues usually send standing sprays, wreaths or vase arrangements instead.
Do casket sprays get buried?
Usually not. The spray is often placed on the grave after the burial, or the family takes some of the flowers home as a keepsake. Customs vary by cemetery, so the funeral director can tell you what to expect.
