The Statement Orchid

Some gifts are read in a second and forgotten by morning. An orchid is read slowly.

It arrives holding itself with a kind of composure — pale blooms opening one after another along a stem that curves like a held breath. Nothing about it is loud. That's the point. It sits on the console table and says the thing you wanted to say without you having to find the words for it.
